Dear Mr. Thomas DiBenedetto, first of all, we want to wish you the best of luck for your new adventure as President of A.S. Roma. We both know that today’s chronicle, these hours, will be remembered as a milestone in the history of Italian soccer. Mr. DiBenedetto, you, indeed, represent the first foreign entrepreneur to invest in our soccer league at the major level. Before talking about your future experience as the President of the A. S. Roma, allow us to thank the Sensi family who, along the last 12 years, has always been able to build a highly competitive team like last year when the giallorossi were running for the first place in the our league.

We must also dedicate a moment to revise the history of the A. S. Roma. In fact, looking back to the pages of the most recent past years, including the victory of the 2001 “Scudetto”, the conquering of the two Coppe Italia and the two Supercoppe in the last ten years, it’ll be easier for you to understand the strong tie between the giallorosso supporter and his team of the heart’s team. This close connection has always had a special value in Rome, in this city, where in hard times it came out the common feeling of passion, of belonging to the same family, of going back to our own roots. These values represented the synchrony between the President and the supporters. This is why, welcoming you and your partners, it’s absolutely necessary to spend a moment to describe people like Dino Viola and Franco Sensi, who worked to give a soul to A. S. Roma: enthusiasm and feelings together with an entrepreneur’s mentality. The sensibility in understanding the people’s thinking, their desires and expectations.

Thinking like supporters.

Too many times we heard that somebody had the call to the roots and there have been who was hiding behind that call as a shield– we’d have a lot to say about this… Showing off a faith that he never had or so mellow that nobody could feel it till the day that it was useful to show the mask of a lifetime supporter. This introduction allows us to give a stronger value to our wishes to you and your partners for a successful job.

It’s undeniable that the main reason of your arrival in the A. S. Roma is with the purpose of making an investment from which you can get your guaranteed profits. What you call in America “making business”. No doubt about this. But we hope, believe, that also for you as happened for Viola, Sensi and their predecessors - the relationship with the people will be based on transparency and honesty.

Transparency: this is the first thing that the supporters ask of you. Just to avoid misunderstandings. Your closest advisers, starting with Mr. Baldissoni (who, before having a professional and trustful relationship with you, was known in Rome like a fairly good ex futsal player), will show you the right way. Hopefully, they’ll help you to understand the peculiarity of this extraordinary field.

Starting this way, you’ll put the basics of a winning project, keeping on the same level your expectations from this investments and the giallorossi supporters’ desires.

Of course, the last ones have great hopes on your action.

The A.S. Roma is nowadays at the top of the Italian and international soccer scenery: a solid and steady growth. A unique start which will allow you, Mr. DiBenedetto, to reach your goals directly. Our hope and desire is that your knowledge as an entrepreneur and your professional experience will help you in this fantastic adventure of leading the A. S. Roma. We hope that this will be reflected in the honest relationship with the supporters, which has always been the a special aspect of the giallorossi people. An honest and effective dialogue: this is the first due step.

Indeed, the people of the A. S. Roma supporters, during the years, have always been close to those who has respected and involved them. This has given to the supporters the sensibility to understand and forgive the Presidents when they made mistakes, in good faith. This is the great wealth of the A. S. Roma: its people. That people that went through hard times with pride and dignity, under the deal of receiving respect and loyalty.

Mr. DiBenedetto, we are sure that these will be the characteristics of your behaviour as the President of the A. S. Roma. We are sure also that, waiting for the warrantees that you’ll give us during your first days as a President, all your efforts will be repaid by the people’s love and support.

We don’t know yet if you have in your staff also Montali and Prade’ ( it would be interesting see how he copes with more available money) or if there’s a new chapter with Baldini’s return to Roma and Sabatini’s arrival. There’s a gossip about this last one that says that he’s tied to the Samp and his arrival would be an unattended surprise.

We’ll see if there’s gonna be a coup de théâtre.

In any case, what counts is the transparency and the honesty also for your advisors.

These are skills that have a very high value in the supporters’ scale.

Allow us to say that nobody can make a deal on this.

Gentile signor Thomas Di Benedetto, innanzitutto vogliamo porgerle i migliori auguri per la sua nuova avventura alla guida della Roma. Sappiamo che la cronaca di questi giorni, di queste ore, è destinata a lasciare un segno, un’impronta, nella storia del calcio italiano: lei, come l'avranno già informata i suoi più stretti collaboratori, rappresenta infatti il primo investitore straniero a varcare la soglia del nostro campionato a così alti livelli. Ma prima di entrare nel merito della sua esperienza al comando della Roma, ci permetta di rivolgere un ringraziamento alla famiglia Sensi, che negli ultimi dodici anni ha sempre avuto la capacità imprenditoriale di allestire una squadra altamente competitiva.

Basti ricordare che di questi tempi, nella scorsa primavera, i giallorossi erano in piena corsa per lo scudetto. Una premessa doverosa, quella di riflettere sul passato della Roma. Perché guardando indietro, sfogliando le pagine più recenti di questo club, contando lo scudetto del 2001, le due Coppe Italia e le due Supercoppe conquistate nell’ultimo decennio, sarà più facile per lei comprendere il legame robusto che contraddistingue il rapporto tra il tifoso giallorosso e la sua squadra del cuore. Un vincolo che si è sempre avvertito in modo particolare a Roma, in questa città, dove nei momenti cruciali è emerso quel richiamo alla passione, al senso di appartenenza, alle proprie radici: valori che hanno scandito la sintonia tra un presidente e il pubblico. Ecco perché, nel dare il benvenuto a lei e agli altri nuovi azionisti, è indispensabile soffermarsi per un attimo su figure come Dino Viola e Franco Sensi, pronti a dare un’anima alla Roma: entusiasmo e sentimenti, a sostegno di una mentalità manageriale. La sensibilità di saper ragionare anche dalla parte della gente, di capirla, di comprenderla, di coinvolgerla. Pensando da tifosi. Tante volte c'è stato il richiamo alle radici e dietro quel richiamo - ed il discorso è ampio - c'è stato anche chi si è nascosto, facendosene scudo. Sbandierando magari una fede che non c'è mai stata o è stata così tiepida da passare inosservata, fino al giorno in cui faceva comodo professarsi tifosissimi della prima ora.

Una premessa che ci consente di dare un valore ancora più assoluto agli auguri di buon lavoro che rivolgiamo a lei e ai soci che hanno sposato il suo progetto. E’ innegabile che il suo ingresso nella Roma debba essere accompagnato dal desiderio personale di realizzare un affare, un investimento in grado di garantire profitti, quello che in America chiamate “ business”. Non ci saranno equivoci al proposito. Ma siamo portati a sperare, a credere, che anche per lei - come era già avvenuto con Viola, Sensi e prima ancora con altri presidenti - il rapporto con la gente sarà all’insegna della trasparenza, della chiarezza. Ecco, la chiarezza: è questo che prima di ogni cosa Le chiedono i tifosi. Per spazzare il campo da possibili malintesi, equivoci. E i suoi collaboratori più stretti, a cominciare dall’avvocato Baldissoni, che prima di instaurare un rapporto fiduciario con lei, era conosciuto a Roma come un discreto ex giocatore di calcetto, dovranno indicarle la strada più corretta: l'aiuteranno a capire - speriamo - la complessità di una piazza intrigante, straordinaria. Condizione basilare per impostare subito un progetto vincente, nel pieno rispetto dei suoi investimenti e delle legittime aspettative dei tifosi giallorossi.

Tifosi che, come è logico, si attendono risultati prestigiosi. La Roma, ormai, è entrata da tempo ai vertici del calcio italiano e internazionale: un’ascesa solida e costante. Un’invidiabile base di partenza che le permetterà, signor DiBenedetto, di sviluppare i suoi progetti senza dover pianificare passaggi intermedi. E il nostro auspicio è che la sua cultura imprenditoriale e il suo bagaglio professionale possano agevolarla in questa affascinante esperienza al timone della Roma. Qualità che, ci auguriamo, possano specchiarsi in quella - come dicevamo - chiarezza di rapporti considerata da sempre un elemento distintivo dai tifosi giallorossi. Un dialogo sincero e costruttivo: ecco il primo passaggio, questo sì obbligato. Il popolo romanista, nella sua storia, è sempre rimasto al fianco di chi l’ha saputo rispettare e coinvolgere: una sensibilità che gli ha permesso di perdonare a volte ai suoi presidenti anche gli errori, quelli commessi in buonafede. Ecco la grande ricchezza della Roma: la sua gente. Quella gente che ha saputo vivere anche i momenti di sofferenza e di rinuncia con orgoglio e dignità, a patto però di ricevere rispetto e lealtà dai suoi interlocutori.

Siamo convinti, signor DiBenedetto, che queste doti caratterizzeranno il suo modo di agire, i suoi comportamenti, il suo percorso nella Roma. Così come siamo sicuri, in attesa delle garanzie che vorrà darci attraverso le prime mosse della sua gestione, che tutti i suoi sforzi saranno di conseguenza ripagati dal sostegno della gente.

PS: I nostri auguri sono estesi naturalmente anche a tutti i collaboratori che affronteranno questa avventura al suo fianco: a cominciare da quelli che conoscono meglio di lei la realtà del calcio italiano e romano. Non sappiamo ancora se faranno parte del suo staff anche Montali e Pradè (che sarebbe interessante vedere all’opera con un portafoglio più munito), oppure se si aprirà un nuovo capitolo con il ritorno a Roma di Baldini e con l’ingresso di Sabatini: per quanto riguarda quest’ultimo, radio- mercato ci dice che è ormai legato alla Samp e il suo ingaggio sarebbe una sorpresa inaspettata. Vedremo se ci sarà un colpo di scena che, certo, ci stupirebbe un po'. Ma anche per loro, per i suoi collaboratori, prima di ogni cosa conteranno la trasparenza e la chiarezza: nella scala dei valori della tifoseria, sono doti che hanno un peso decisivo. Su questo, permetteteci, non si potrà mai fare un affare.
